I Left a 25-Year Career in CPG to Make Soybean Snacks. Here's Why.

By Attessa Bradley, Founder & CEO, Standing Tall Foods

At 49, perimenopause blindsided me.

Hot flashes that woke me up at 3am. Brain fog that made me question whether I was losing my edge. Exhaustion that no amount of sleep seemed to fix. I went to my doctor expecting answers. What I got was a shrug and a pamphlet.

So I did what I had done for 25 years in the consumer packaged goods industry: I dug into the research myself.

What I found changed everything.

The Gap No One Is Talking About

100% of women go through menopause. Women are 51% of the population. The women's health market is projected to exceed $600 billion by 2030. Yet most women enter perimenopause undiagnosed, undertreated, and underserved.

When I looked specifically at nutrition, the gap was staggering. The supplement aisle is full of pills, powders, and potions making vague hormone-balancing claims. Pharmaceuticals exist for severe symptoms. But food? Real food, designed specifically to support women in midlife? Almost nothing.

That is when I knew there was a brand to build.

One Data Point That Stopped Me Cold

Only 12% of women in Japan report hot flashes, according to anthropologist Margaret Lock's landmark cross-cultural research. In the United States, that number exceeds 80%.

The countries are not that different genetically. The biggest measurable dietary difference is soy consumption. Japanese women eat soy daily, in multiple forms, across their entire lives. American women rarely eat whole soy at all.

When you look at broader health outcomes in high-soy cultures, the pattern holds: lower rates of hot flashes, osteoporosis, heart disease, and breast cancer. The research does not prove causation definitively, but the data is consistent enough that it demanded my attention.

Why Soy Works for Women in Midlife

Soy is not a trend. It has supported women's health for over 5,000 years. Here is what the science says about why.

Complete protein. Soy contains all nine essential amino acids your body needs but cannot produce. It scores 1.0 on the PDCAAS protein quality scale, the highest possible rating, comparable to whey and egg protein. For women over 40 who lose 3-8% of muscle mass per decade, that matters enormously.

Isoflavones. Soy contains isoflavones, plant compounds that act as natural estrogen receptor modulators. During perimenopause and menopause, when estrogen drops sharply, isoflavones provide gentle support to your bones, heart, and brain. No other common food does this.

Heart health. Soy protein is the only plant protein source that has carried an FDA heart health claim. Research consistently shows that soy consumption reduces total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides.

Bone protection. Studies show that soy isoflavone intake is associated with improved bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, addressing one of the most serious long-term risks of the menopause transition.

Why I Was the Person to Build This

After 25 years building brands at Stonyfield, Orgain, Grandy Organics, and Church & Dwight, working on products like First Response and Answer, I understood how to take a science-backed idea and turn it into something women would actually reach for at the store.

I knew how to source clean ingredients. I knew co-manufacturing. I knew retail, e-commerce, and how to talk to a consumer who is skeptical of health claims because she has been let down by them before.

What I did not have was the product. The snack that made soy accessible, delicious, and easy to fit into a real life.

So I built it.

Introducing Standing Tall Foods

I launched Standing Tall Foods in January 2026.

Crunchy, dry-roasted soybean snacks in three flavors: Sea Salt, Chili Lime, and Salt & Pepper. Each serving delivers 12 grams of complete plant protein, 2 grams of fiber, and zero sugar. Non-GMO, North American grown soybeans. Nothing artificial. Nothing unnecessary.

The format was intentional. Women in midlife are busy. They are running companies, raising kids, caring for aging parents, and somewhere in there trying to take care of themselves. They do not have time for complicated nutrition protocols. They need a snack they can grab, toss in a bag, and feel good about eating.

A handful of Standing Tall delivers more protein than a Greek yogurt, more fiber than a granola bar, and none of the added sugar that most snacks carry. It fits in a drawer, a gym bag, a carry-on.

What I Have Learned Since Launching

The response has confirmed everything I suspected.

Women over 40 are not looking for brands that condescend to them. They are not looking for products that promise miracle results. They are looking for brands that take them seriously, back their claims with real science, and make it easy to do right by their bodies.

When you build something specifically for women in this life stage, with that level of respect and rigor, they show up.

The menopause conversation is no longer whispered. Women are demanding information, products, and healthcare that treat midlife as a priority, not an afterthought. Standing Tall exists because that demand is real and the food options have not caught up.

We are fixing that. One serving at a time.
